Winter Trees

We came across these bare trees at different spots in Istanbul. I love the shapes of the trees and the vast expanse of branches reaching for the sky.

Scenic Weekends - Memories of Ephesus

DSC_0704
Here's a typical view of the ruins and structures scattered across the landscape at The Ancient Ruins of Ephesus in Turkey

Beautiful in its own right and reveals a lot about the rich historical past.

The entire environment is peaceful and the lush greenery is so soothing to the eyes

The surrounding views made it a worthwhile stop and I love the beautiful bursts of spring popping around the place

Our World - Faces of Istanbul

Photographing people is something I've always enjoyed doing when I traveled. While I love shooting landscapes and architectures, I love the fun and challenge of photographing people. Every time I look at these photos, it brings me back in time and reminds me of all the wonderful people I met during that day. I think at least half of the people I encountered are willing to let me take their photo.

I also enjoy the moment when I can capture people without them knowing I'm taking their photos. It's a challenge every time and a great way to capture the expressions or emotions they have in a particular moment.

Our World - Selime Monastery, Cappadocia

For Our World entry, I'm featuring another memorable series of photos of my trip to Cappodocia in Turkey.

DSC_0341 (3)
Selime Kalesi or the Castle Monastery Church is one of the largest religious sites in Cappadocia, carved out of the rocks by monks in the 13th century.

DSC_0397
There are different caves and connecting tunnels, some with ancient kitchens, stables, chapels, cathedral-sized church and some secret passageways.

DSC_0377
The rocks have gotten so many bizarre shapes throughout the years and some even look like faces, a bit creepy I'd say. Here's one of them and it portrays the sense that someone is always watching over your shoulder.

DSC_0371 (2)
The hiking trails can be quite slippery and nerve-wracking and there are no safety guard rails to prevent you from falling over the rocks. I've always wonder how those ancient inhabitants made it up here at night!

DSC_0382
Due to the lack of safety barriers and my fear of falling, I stayed on the lower level while hubby took the tour around. While he was climbing high, I wandered around, took some photos and enjoyed the beauty of nature.

DSC_0390
I also discovered from the tour guide that a few scenes from the original Star Wars was filmed here.

PhotoHunt - Broken

These photos were captured during my hiking adventures at Ihlara Valley in Cappadocia last year. We spent a few hours hiking through the canyon and came across plenty of broken things in nature.

DSC_0279
Much of the region of is composed of broken pieces of rocks following several eruptions of Mount Erciyes. This is also where the early Christians in the Byzantine period dug underground dwellings and churches into the hills to escape from the Romans.

DSC_0218
It's quite common to see trees broken off everywhere on the trail, some have been uprooted by the strong wind and even fell on the opposite direction.

DSC_0220
As we walked along, I found this broken ladder lying across the river with some broken woods scattered along the stream.

DSC_0222
There are also branches and twigs hanging on the tree, almost broken off.

Our World in Cappadocia

The very first impression we had of Cappadocia was how beautiful it was! I've written a series of posts on this place before but every time I looked back at my photo archives of this exotic sight, I can’t help but being inspired and awed by the memories of fairy chimneys and underground cities. I was only there for one day but I saw so much and took more than 400 photos on that day and walked like this journey never ends.

Here are more photos that I'd like to share on Our World.

DSC_0032
The rock formations were the result of volcanic eruptions of Mount Erciyes, thousands and thousands of years of wind and water molding them into the shape we saw today. It's located in eastern Anatolia and the entire area has a long history ranging from the Hittite Empire to the Ottoman Empire. During the medieval period, Cappadocia was home to Christian refugees, hiding from Romans and then latterly the Muslims who periodically swept through the region.

DSC_0071
The homes and churches built into the fairy chimneys are unlike anything I've ever seen and it's cool to see the exquisite views of the canyon from various vantage points.

DSC_0033
I’ll never forget the wondrous sight of the wave-like hills below, coloured with warm hues of pink, peach and cream in all its glory.

DSC_0046
The entire landscape was surreal and it felt like we had just landed on another planet.

DSC_0015
There were also many cave hotels and bed and breakfast that allow visitors the once in a lifetime experience to live in them. I would have love to go on a cave house tour, spending more time around all the exquisite carvings and fairy chimneys. However, being in a day tour did not offer us that kind of luxury.

DSC_0439
After a day spent of hiking and exploring we made our way out of the canyon and then headed back towards town. Before heading off, I came across this tree full of pots and wagon wheel that caught my eye and I couldn't resist a shot.

It was an absolutely stunning day in Cappadocia and hope to come back to see the areas I did not have time to see if there's an opportunity again.

The first series can be seen here. You can also look at other photos in my Cappadocia set.

PhotoHunt - Busy

DSC_0075
A busy waterfront at Eminonu in Istanbul with Suleymaniye mosque in the background. There are lots of vendors, vehicles and pedestrians along the promenade.

DSC_0216
The waterfront area is always busy with fish sandwich boats moored at the dock and the cruise ferries going back and forth.

DSC_0226
We took a ferry across the busy Bosphorus for a 90 minute ride and the cruise was a wonderful way to see the city along the shores.
