Mallards on Ice

DSC_0098
A flock of mallards resting on frozen river in Moscow late winter.

There were some big chunks of broken ice on the river and it looked freezing cold

but they seemed to be coping just fine.

Amazing that those ducks can sleep or rest standing on the icy water. I hope they survived through winter.

  3. At the risk of anthropomorphizing the ducks, they look as though they might be freezing. I'd be.

  4. Looks freezing cold to me, they seem stronger than I because they can stand the cold. :P

  5. We always used to feed the ducks in Amsterdam in the winter - and provide warm water for them to drink!

  6. Bonza photos, i especially like the duck in the 3rd photo and his yellow beak and orange feet which really stand out against the ice :-).

  7. Yes it's amazing how their feet can brave that cold. Maybe their feet's skin has already acclimatized with their climate and already very thick unlike our ducks here both in Malaysia and the Philippines.

  9. I think about penguin feet sometimes at night when it's cold and get up and walk barefoot on the cold floor and curl up my toes to have the least contact, how penguins do the same. These little guys are standing flat footed on the ice, I wonder if their webbed feet go numb.

  11. The poor ducks, I am sure that they don't like to be on the ice. Good photos.

  12. Why the mallards have a built-in heater in their web feet? Grrrrrrr..ma feet frozen already hahaha. Nice pix of the broken pieces of ice.

  15. Cool photos. I like the way the sky is reflected in the ice--kind of a broken mirror effect--but the ducks are really neat, too.

  21. These are neat pictures. I've seen ducks on ice here during the winter, but our winters are much shorter than those in Moscow.

  22. Their webbed feet must have insulated them from the cold. :D
