Skywatch - Happy Earth Day

In honour of Earth week, I'm featuring a compilation of my favourite shots of nature's wonders. It reminds me of just how beautiful the earth is, and how important it is to to protect and preserve the environment. I think Earth Day should be everyday and it shouldn’t be seen as just another day in our calendar.

We should always go green, recycle, use less plastic and avoid pollution to combat global warming. Let's get conscious about our planet a little bit more so that these same wonders will be here for our children and future generations to enjoy.

PhotoHunt - Bags

Every Monday is 'No Plastic Bags Day' in Penang. Over the course to reduce the consumption of plastic bags and encourage the use of eco grocery bags, a 20-sen charge per bag will be imposed on consumers by most major stores. Proceeds will be donated to the state’s Partners Against Poverty (PAP) campaign to help the hardcore poor. With the hysteria surrounding global warming, I think it’s a great move to help protect the planet.

Doing my contribution for the environment, I try to bring my own bags when grocery shopping avoiding plastic bags. But seriously, I think more and more people should practise this initiative more often, if not daily. I keep some reusable bags in the back of my car, but the only problem is that I need to cultivate the habit of remembering to grab them along whenever I go shopping. Imagine if people consistently use reusable bags, eventually there will no longer have tons of plastic bags accumulating at home which are hard to recycle and that people feel sorry about throwing away.

PhotoHunt - Garbage

I came across this illegal dumping of garbage in an abandoned industrial near Penang and some of the vacant shop lots in the suburb. Apparently, the garbage has been there for quite some time and nothing can be done to stop all this. Everything from auto spare parts to rubber scraps, sharp metals to construction debris have been discarded in the area. I seriously believe that there are several illegal dumps like this occurs in other places as well.

It’s already bad enough that the precious air quality has been deteriorated due to the changing climate regime and now this! As I was passing by certain alleys, I could smell the putrid aroma which was not appealing and palatable. It looks like an absolute junkyard filled with piles of garbage bags, and empty boxes accumulating in driveways and alleys. I hope the city council would introduce new measures to curb the amount of illegal dumping in the city.

These pictures reveal a small glimpse of what an abandoned lot looks like these days. :(

What a terrible eyesore!

The improper disposal of garbage poses a threat to both the humankind and environment

Wordless Wednesday - Earth Day (Go Green)

Going green and eco-friendly are the current buzzwords. With the hysteria surrounding global warming and climate change, it's never too early to get started on saving Mother Earth. Each of us can bring a significant role in adopting a more responsible and healthy lifestyle by doing basic things such as switching off the electrical appliances when they're not being used, practice recycling, avoid the use of Styrofoam and plastic bags and reduce water usage. These are some of the reasonable ways to protect our planet, before it is too late.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Hour 2009

VOTE EARTH

As Earth Hour approaches, we're constantly reminded about doing our part to help protect the earth. The idea here is to encourage people around the world to shut off unnecessary lights and electronics during the designated hour. This event was initiated by WWF-Australia and it has inspired many cities worldwide to show their support to combat global warming and protect our environment. Events like this is a great start for people across the globe to go green.

We can all contribute something, even if it's a very small gesture which can mean a significant difference to our mother nature. Personally, I want to appreciate the beautiful night sky, gazing at the twinkling stars with my kids. It can be a wonderful experience but I think the reason I love the stars most is that there is light shining in the darkness. They are simply beautiful.

With all the lights off, each of our efforts will be considered a vote for Earth against global warming. Let's bring it on, people!

Happy Earth Hour!
