PhotoHunt - Orange
One of the distinct features of Athens is the rows of orange trees that lined the streets and pathways. When I first spotted these trees laden with fruits, I was intrigued. They are highly aromatic, look so fruitful but it makes me wonder why had no one picked them. I later found out that the fruits were actually bitter oranges, far too sour and bitter to enjoy.
These oranges are picked every year by the city hall and they are primarily used to make marmalade, liqueurs like Cointreau and Grand Marnier, or various sauces, glazes and other culinary treats. The flowers are used to produce essences for aromatherapy and the leaves for herbal purposes.

They would probably be ok for bitter marmalade jam, but still it's nice to leave them.

ReplyDeleteG' Day From Australia, At first glance i didn't think they were oranges because of the unusual red colour now i know they are sour this is the reason for the differnt colour i suspect.

ReplyDeleteInteresting - I thought they were darker in color than the typical color of a navel orange. I'm surprised that we don't see more orange trees on the Photohunt.
ReplyDeleteIt's a common sight here and I almost wanted to pluck those oranges whenever I see a tree with so much oranges and the owners don't bother getting them =(
ReplyDeletehappy Sunday to you and your family LR!
ReplyDeleteThey remind me of those mandarin oranges that we buy during Lunar New year.
ReplyDeleteSour and bitter? No wonder no one plucks them! I like sweet oranges!

ReplyDeleteWow! i have seen orange trees in China but yours looked stronger in colours! maybe sweeter too!
ReplyDeleteGreat night view, the light is perfect.
ReplyDeleteI would never have guessed they are bitter. Maybe that's why there are so many still left on the tree.
