Camera Critters - Freaky crawly

DSC_4598
I think this is the weirdest and creepiest lizards I've ever seen. Despite its alien-like appearance, I find it interesting to watch behind glass, but I would run a mile if I saw one in the open.

The gila monster, as it's commonly known, is one of the only two venomous lizards in the world, so i don't think you want to mess with this little fella even if you really love lizards.

Captured at Singapore Zoo.

  1. We had a lot of these in the 'wild' when we lived in Tucson Arizona...in fact, I remember one time when we were hiking one crossed the trail right in front of our feet. Thing is, they ARE venomous, but they need to chew instead of a one time strong bite. The venom is released as they chew. Oh, and they're slow as the 2nd coming of Christ also...not a fast moving creature at all...so, no worries. You can out-walk them!!

  3. You did a great job of getting these pictures from behind glass. We have Gila Monsters out west in this country, but fortunately we didn't meet any while we were hiking this past summer.

  9. They are very common in the Southern Arizona deserts (I lived in AZ for 40 years until last December - I actually ran over one of these on the highway one day - not intentionally, of course!)
