My World - Piazza Navona, Rome

A visit to the famous Piazza Navona in Rome is a must for every tourist. For as long as I can remember, this vivacious square is a great spot for people watching and it is also one of the great places in Rome to get a portrait or caricature sketched by one of the talented artists within the square.

There are many beautiful paintings of floral and landscape scenery.

Many dedicated artists try to sell their paintings there to make ends meet.

As an artist, it can be difficult to earn a living even when times are good. I've a great amount of respect and admiration for those who has managed to make a decent living for themselves through their artwork.

Here are some interesting caricatures of important figures or celebrities I came across.

I find it amazingly cool how an artist can take certain features of one’s face and draw them totally out of proportion yet at the same time have the picture resemble that person in some way. Or at least that’s what a good artist can create. Can you recognize any of these funny celebrities caricatures?

  1. It's a pity though. I may not know much about painting techniques, etc but from the pics, the paintings look gorgeous.

  3. I see Brad Pitt and Pamela Anderson and Mick Jagger and Marilyn Monroe.

Amazing to have that kind of talent and yet they struggle.

  4. They got talent don't it... only problem is, there isn't much people in this world that appreciates the art.

  5. The paintings are beautiful, especially the one of sunflowers! I would gladly buy one.

  6. I can recognize the style! An artist lives in my town, Popa's, who begun to practice this style years ago, creating a caricature school in town. Many artists of that school are going in Western Europe during the summer months, to earn some money by doing those caricatures. It is quite possible that the artist you saw there is a Romanian!

  12. Hello hello!

I haven't been to Rome but definitely, one day, I'll be there for a short vacation. It's on my travel wishlist!

Oh my.. I can't guess the celebrities. Sorry..

I, too want a caricature of myself! I wonder how much each costs... ?

    Hugs from Sweden.

  14. There are a lot of talented artists out there. I guess the most talented ones with a touch of good PR skills make a good living and the not so good don't.

  17. That’s the thing about a good caricaturist. When you can recognize the person with a few simple and exaggerated strokes that IS talent, indeed. Having been to Italy where I saw several street corners with artists selling their work, I can see it is not easy to make a living that way. I think it’s a worldwide condition for creative people. We have similar artists here in BC

  19. You have been very privileged to traveling so much, which i also would love to do. I envy people whose work involved travelling like the photojournalists, they are paid while enjoying themselves. I've been to this Piazza and i walked for 2 days through the ruins there and some more places. I also remember the Egyptian pharaoh like a golden statue and some other human structures mimicking some famous figures for some tips from delighted and generous tourists. The artists are so creative but it might be a difficult life!

  25. Hi Maxi,
Rome is a great place to visit and relax, while tasting some exquisite food and wines. hope you'll be able to make it to Rome someday. as far as i can tell you, prices can start from as little as 50 euros for an A4 Line Drawing in Black Ink. the colour prints would fetch higher prices.

    Hi Pat,
although i enjoyed looking at those artwork, i had no intention of buying any of them as i don't have space in my house. :)

  26. The last four, I guess, were leo de caprio, pam anderson, mick jagger and marilyn monroe (just read her sad bio last night). Btw, i always wanted to be an artist because I love painting. Just like what you've mentioned, artists really struggle to make ends meet.

Love all your photos. Love all the artworks. :)

  27. It's hard to make a living as an artist since art is so subjective. And this place has a variety to accommodate all tastes.
