We recently had to deal with a mouse that had made its way into our home but we couldn’t possibly live with any sort of mouseketeers in our house, could we? I get the creeps even thinking about the rodent crawling into my bed at night. It won't really harm you, but it can cause enough damage by gnawing food.I discovered a few packs of food stuff were chewed open which means that the evil mousie has been feasting on the packs all night long. I'm not sure how the rodent managed to sneak into my house in the first place. It's an annoying pest and I don't want it as housemate because it probably carries germs, infections and such.
With no time to lose, I set a mousetrap cage and placed it near where I had seen the little critter. The kitchen may be my favorite section in the house and it happens to be also the mice's favorite part of the house too. Obviously, it’s the place where they can find food.
Since I had previous encounters with mice, it wasn't difficult to set up the trap. I have used this cage trap for years and all it takes is a piece of dried toasted salted fish as a bait. Tying the bait to the hook works well enough as when the mousie touches the bait, the trap door will snap shut. I tried to imagine that little critter being roasted but then, I couldn't bear the thought of hurting, killing it or leaving it to die of starvation. My hubby would usually take it a very long way, away from my home to set it free.
I bet it looks just cute in the cage but running around my house doesn't sounds cool at all. I'm sure many of you have seen cartoons like Tom and Jerry and would have known the reasons behind of Tom having his way with annoying Jerry.Have you encountered any unwanted house guests, pests or otherwise?

No it doesn't look cute in the gage. Like you I don't like them in the house. Just recently had one; but I want them dead and gone. Don't want to take extra time to trap alive, set free so they can reproduce and enter another's house.

These rodents are a pests. Catching them brings up the issue of how to deal with these peskies. Setting them free will only mean they might come back again.

ReplyDeleteAnyway I'm glad that you managed to catch it. These little rodents can sometimes really cause havoc huh! Sometimes it's virtually hard to catch them, especially the "Senior" ones. They won't bite the bait we put on easily. :D

ReplyDeleteI can't even imagine killing a mouse and i consider that as cold-hearted. my dad used to pour boiling water on them and the poor little creatures are left hurt and crying. I figured 10 miles is far enough away from my house to release them. I know what you mean that mice do carry deadly diseases and all but i don't have the nerve to kill them.
so what will you do with them Mei Teng? kill them or set them free?

It does look cute in the cage but definitely not a wanted house pet. Good to hear that it was caught but not harmed and freed. Hope that it won't go into any house and create havoc.

ReplyDeletewe had some intruders from time to time but not inside our home...some manages to sneak in but our trusty pet cat does the job! it was back home in the phils.
We have lots of birds at the backyard so the mousies and big rats try to sneak on them. Either our cats or dogs get them or dad =) he's good in setting traps!
I live out in the country with a huge field right behind our house.

But, my dog MolliPop got sprayed by a nice little skunk the other night and that was fun!!
I just posted a picture a couple of weeks ago of a bobcat that had just eaten one my geese.
Yes we even have an occasional mountain lion!!
At night we usually don't stray too far without our shotgun.
I still live in the old west!! I keep trying to remind my husband that he was a country boy. I was raised in Dallas in the city!!
But, I am adjusting as long no gorillas show up!!

Thanks bunches for the ec's, how sweet of you. I think the house in the house cost us quite a bit. He or she was seen under the stove, no way was I gonna stand there and cook, so we ate out. Plus I couldn't think of cooking without cleaning cleaning cleaning. Oven cleaner purchased and the job done several days latter...after we saw the dead mouse outside. Then you have to check all the cupboards, thrown things out that are questionable. We left the light on at night, as the tend to not stir as much in daylight. So, the extra cost of electric, plus the cost of the exterminator. So, my thinking is, if I set it free someone else...someone else will have the same problems. They do get in, only takes about 1/4 inch which is pretty small from what the exterminator told me.

I was worried there might be more, they say usually that's the case; but knock on wood...so far we've not seen another.

ReplyDeleteEven if there's cockroaches in the house I'll hunt them down! thank God there's no rats in my flat but I've seen them around the ground floor near the rubbish chute. They usually are seen at night and they are huge!

ReplyDeleteGlad you got the bugger. We had mice many times, but last month, after we went away for holidays for about 3 weeks, We had RATS. Eventually poison baits got rid of them.
