PhotoHunt - Henna design on hands

Henna tattoo is one of the most popular attractions in the heart of Penang Hill.

DSC_9166
Here's a henna tattoo being applied on a Arab woman.

DSC_9167
Application of the henna paste using a ready made cone. I learned that they will fade in about 2-4 weeks, depending on the type of henna that has been used.

DSC_9168
As evident from this picture, it takes a while for a newly painted Henna design to dry up.

DSC_9170
All those beautiful swirling patterns amazed me and the best aspect of henna is that it is totally natural and safe. Someday I'd like to have my hands done like that for the fun of it.

PhotoHunt - Something green, wind

I love to spend my weekend mornings here in Penang Hill getting some cool fresh air and enjoying the beautiful green landscapes.

DSC_9082
It took us approximately 15 minutes to get up to the peak of Penang Hill via the funicular train.

DSC_9086
Once at the top of the hill, it is impossible not to feel refreshed and rejuvenated when surrounded by lush greenery.

DSC_9121
I enjoy watching the trees swaying gently in the wind. Moments like these uplift my spirits.

Our World - Tzu Chi Annual Blessings ceremony

During the Chinese New Year celebration, I was invited to  the annual Blessings ceremony of Tzu Chi Foundation at Penang International Sports Arena. With a crowded venue, I was glad that we arrived early for good seats.

I was first introduced to Tzu Chi Foundation a few years ago where my ex-boss was actively involved in many community projects. This non-profit organization provides help to local communities by delivering food and warm clothes to the homeless, recycling and protecting the environment, providing relief to the victims of international disaster, offering weekend schooling for young people and providing medical support to the less fortunate.

Pictured here are some of the highlights of the event. There are about 1,600 volunteers who had dedicated themselves to this ceremony.

Desktop4-001
Some of the activities include sign language performance, inspiring documentaries, choir singing, stage drama, dharma drum and verses of incense praise.

DSC_9963
One can also view and admire the lights that popped all over the place in a spectacular way.

DSC_0055
It amazed me seeing all these Tzu Chi members who had worked so hard to participate in this activity, hoping to inspire people to be grateful for the past year, and to welcome the year ahead with great love.

DSC_0086
As can be seen on the big screen, The Great Awakened of the Universe is the depiction of Buddha of Tzu Chi Foundation. Within the statue, Buddha is letting the world witness his enlightenment. While I don't obtained deep knowledge in Buddhism, I was deeply touched by the story of hope and strength of Tzu Chi's dedicated efforts.

DSC_0104
Together with thousands of other attendees we light candles and pray for world peace, happiness, and harmony of humankind.

DSC_0110
The attendees went home with happiness and our prayers continue for a better world and hope the end of all suffering.

A heart full of love is the most beautiful thing in the world.

Our World - Chinese New Year open house in Penang

We attended the Chinese New Year open house at the Han Chiang High School in George Town this morning. Having heard that the top South Korean pop star PSY is coming to town, we arrived for the event as early as 7 a.m. to be sure that we would be able to secure a good vantage point.

DSC_9715
It wasn't too crowded when we first arrived but the crowd size certainly rose after 11 a.m.

DSC_9614
A few hours before PSY and his entourage rocked the stage, the chinese orchestra celebrate the start of the prosperous Year of The Snake with lovely traditional music.

DSC_9673
Several cultural dances of various races and a dragon and phoenix performance were also featured.

DSC_9695
There were also local artists singing their hearts out with enthusiasm

DSC_9721
Apart from that, politicians were in great spirits and all clad in hues of red, bringing festive joy to everyone

DSC_9777
And after waiting with great anticipation, superstar PSY with his entourage finally turned up on stage and were greeted with a rousing welcome from the Penangites and tourists.

DSC_9845
Just like everyone else, we were totally enthralled to say the least, and it didn't matter that the sun was scorching on our backs, because the superstar certainly had our full attention with his world famous 'Gangnam style' moves. Sadly the performance ended too soon but everyone left the venue turned on and satisfied.

Our World - Auspicious beginnings for Chinese New Year

This time of year, most shopping malls and homes are brimming with red lanterns and other red decorative items to welcome the Chinese New Year celebrations. With just a few days left before the festive season kicks in, I thought it would be nice to start off the week sharing some festive photos captured at Queensbay shopping mall in Penang.

Penang Street Art

I've been extremely busy with my house renovation and decoration lately so I apologize for not being able to keep my blog updated and visit you. Despite my hectic schedule, I managed to take some time off and checked out some of the street murals in the city on this occasion.

DSC_6489
This art piece, depicting a real bicycle and two children painted to look as if they are riding on it, is part of the Mirrors George Town street art project designed by international artist Ernest Zacharevic for the George Town Festival 2012.

DSC_6502
It has since become a hit with tourists and locals who enjoy posing for pictures with the mural.

DSC_6512
As we made our way off Armenian Street into Ah Quee Street, we discovered another cool art piece depicting a boy on a bike.

DSC_6553
At a different corner, here's one featuring a boy standing on tiptoes on a chair at Canon Street.

DSC_6550
It's really cool to see some people interacting with the artwork and expressing their own creativity.

DSC_6558
From the many different murals across the streets to the large-scale depiction of a trishaw rider at Upper Penang road, these new attractions are definitely drawing the crowds.

I find such artwork amazing and inspiring and I think they are a great way to represent the spirit of community and artistic impression in George Town.

PhotoHunt - Song and Music

This is Joanne Yeoh, world acclaimed violinist entertaining the crowd during a corporate event last year.

Picture 706
I'm not really a fan of classical music because it can sometimes be pretty slow. Joanne's music is a mix between classical and contemporary music and is spectacular. I was blown away by her performance.

Picture 708
With her friendly and welcoming presence, she connects with her audience with ease and flow. To our joy and amazement, she explained the history of the pieces and what had inspired her to record them.

Picture 712
Her passion and enthusiasm are truly inspiring.

I searched YouTube for her performances and found this. These are a couple of songs from her album, Pulse of the Metropolis.
Enjoy!
