My first impression of Athens was a huge city filled with tons of tagging and graffiti art. It is almost impossible to pass a corner without seeing graffiti everywhere in the city. I came across some artistic and colourful ones and some of it are simple written words found on every conceivable surface. In my eyes, much of it is mindless tagging but in the city like Athens, people tend to look at it more as an art than as vandalism.
Here are a few examples of graffiti in various forms found throughout the city.

The entrance to that men's shop is a good example of the type of graffiti I enjoy, great choice for the theme!!

Some graffiti I like, but others can be more ugly. Great take on the theme :)

Yeah, am with you in that graffiti often looks more to me like vandalism than art... :S

ReplyDeleteLike the third one, it makes me chuckle. It would be kind of overwhelming though to see all that graffiti when I'm used to the clean and sanitary environment here in the US.

ReplyDeleteI just went to Athens this past summer, and was taken by the graffiti as well. A lot of it was so elaborate, and our guide told us it's like that because the city doesn't clean it up since a lot of the buildings are so old it would be an expensive restoration. So they just don't do it. Which was fine with me! I took more pictures of the graffiti than anything else I think- and dedicated several blog posts of my own to it!
Hmmm the 1st two photos I could say it's kind of a vandalism. And the last two photos I could consider it as mural. Great capture and thanks for sharing!

I find graffiti interesting to look at when it is paintings or has a message behind it, but I find some of it really ugly.

Well, I think that graffiti broke the spirit of the city!
