My first impression of Athens was a huge city filled with tons of tagging and graffiti art. It is almost impossible to pass a corner without seeing graffiti everywhere in the city. I came across some artistic and colourful ones and some of it are simple written words found on every conceivable surface. In my eyes, much of it is mindless tagging but in the city like Athens, people tend to look at it more as an art than as vandalism.
Here are a few examples of graffiti in various forms found throughout the city.

Really? People look at it more as an art? :/
ReplyDeletethat's creative!
ReplyDeleteVery nice!!I like it!!
ReplyDeleteIt is the new form for 21 cent art!!Well some of it!!:))
Kisses and may your weekend be happy:)))
The entrance to that men's shop is a good example of the type of graffiti I enjoy, great choice for the theme!!

Some graffiti I like, but others can be more ugly. Great take on the theme :)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea for the theme. I've always liked graffiti and you shot some great examples. Happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteI found this post to be very interesting, but I guess I don't have a proper appreciation for art!
ReplyDeleteWow great pick for the theme! I like to look at creative graffiti. some of it is really good art work!!

Great, Life Ramblings! I like them very much and I make a collection from everywhere. Have you seen my recent post about grafitti in my town?
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely and creative take on the theme!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend!

Yeah, am with you in that graffiti often looks more to me like vandalism than art... :S
ReplyDeleteMindless tagging is right specially the first photo. I don't mind graffiti as long as it's painted tastefully.
ReplyDeleteGood choice for the theme...happy weekend...
ReplyDeletei can see art in the 3rd and 4th photo, but i don't think the graffiti on the 1st and 2nd photos are art.
ReplyDeletemarvelous take on the theme.
I can understand looking at the painted pieces as art but just squiggling one's name one someone's house...
ReplyDeleteI love the 4th one ... that definitely was art ...
ReplyDeleteI'm up at http://lifeiskulayful.blogspot.com/
We have that one too. Just dont know why some people just enjoy vandalizing things.
ReplyDeleteIt's great how grafitti can actually brighten a place up, I think.
ReplyDeleteHi LR, I'm here admiring your pics!
ReplyDeleteI think it is a superb and very creative form of art indeed, how unique! :D
ReplyDeleteI love pic 3 the most although pic 4 comes a very close second! :D
ReplyDeleteLike the third one, it makes me chuckle. It would be kind of overwhelming though to see all that graffiti when I'm used to the clean and sanitary environment here in the US.
ReplyDeleteStopping by to welcome you to my blog...and check out yours!
ReplyDeleteI just went to Athens this past summer, and was taken by the graffiti as well. A lot of it was so elaborate, and our guide told us it's like that because the city doesn't clean it up since a lot of the buildings are so old it would be an expensive restoration. So they just don't do it. Which was fine with me! I took more pictures of the graffiti than anything else I think- and dedicated several blog posts of my own to it!
Hmmm the 1st two photos I could say it's kind of a vandalism. And the last two photos I could consider it as mural. Great capture and thanks for sharing!

Some of them are good!
ReplyDeleteI guess everyone needs a platform. There will be lots of graffiti for this week's theme. :)
ReplyDeleteMine is up and "written" right here:

I find graffiti interesting to look at when it is paintings or has a message behind it, but I find some of it really ugly.
ReplyDeleteI always thought they look really interesting but sometimes they can be a bit distracting. I love the third photo! xoxoxoo
ReplyDeleteGraffiti can be very beautiful. In Singapore, it is an offence to draw graffiti on public property. :P
ReplyDeleteYes, there sure was a LOT of graffiti in Athens when we were there last fall. I also went with graffiti this week - although mine is found in the Vatican.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend.
I love graffiti.Wonderful colors! Some of them are really great.Thank you for the post.
ReplyDeleteMuy interesante blog. Saludos

ReplyDeleteDon't forget to validate your email. Thanks. :)
Well, I think that graffiti broke the spirit of the city!
ReplyDeleteHere in Bucharest they give places to them to draw on the walls ...not everywhere in the city...
Regards!
Sad to see a city covered with graffiti; although, the last 2 looked artistic.
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful city...
ReplyDeleteI like the bottom two pics which are probably commissioned graffiti.
ReplyDeleteThank you for this cool topic!..I agree not always pretty..but one of the oldest forms of Art!..think of Petroglyphs and numerous murals in caves all over the planet! :-)
