Skywatch - Singapore skyline at night

One of the best things I love about Nikon D90 is it delivers great night photos even without using a tripod. Having an amazing DSLR equipped with Vibration Reduction (VR) lens make this kind of shooting possible. It allows handheld shooting at twilight, at night and even in poorly lit environment. Although nothing beats a tripod, I don't usually carry one when I travel as it's heavy to lug around all the time and it takes too much time to set up and take down.

Here are some of my best handheld shots of Singapore captured from the observation deck of the Sands Skypark. Enjoy.

I envy your hands as i can't get these detailed sharp shots handheld specially after already taking many shots. I know how heavy a D90 is as it is my friends' camera. Mine is lighter and also have Image Stabilizer in the body, but i still cannot get these clear ones. I am really envious. The compositions are great too!

What incredible photos. Your camera really is excellent, I have certainly noticed that. Do you know what setting you used? My photos tend to come out brown at night and yours are a lovely blue-tone.

Wow! Very impressive. I always bring tripod with me. I wish I can do the same and deliver this kind of beautiful photos.

Thank you everyone for appreciating my photos.

Hi Emm,
I usually use night portrait or programmed auto mode when shooting night scenes. i'm not a photography expert so i don't use manual mode much for night views. Getting the camera settings correct can be difficult and time consuming for a slow learner like me and you have to worry about adjusting shutter speeds, apertures, proper exposure, good colors and ISO sensitivity.

Great shots and view. I heard the swimming pool is very good in this hotel.

These are awesome! I have a hard time taking shots that I have to hand hold sometimes, and my Nikon makes it easier! Lovely photos, especilally like the ferris wheel!

the right equipment makes all the difference. I generally set my camera down and set the timer, if I don't have my tripod with me. you have a very steady hand

Your night shots are fabulous! You took them moreover without a tripod. Can I take beautiful night views like you with nikon D5100 I have? But I am a beginner so I have to learn more how to take photo.
Thank you for information and wonderful views.

OK, I'm jealous! I use a tripod and my shots don't come out this good!

Wonderful, wonderful nighttime pictures.

I also use night portrait and agree with you about the settings. I went on a camera settings course recently and the tutor suggested using landscape on those scenes. It has a small aperture like the night portrait (so you have to use a tripod or hold it still) but works to put as much as possible of the photo in focus. I haven't used it yet but will be sure to mention it if I experiment with it!

Fantastic night time pictures. Best time to capture the glass and steel jungle!

Your shots have came out pretty good considering they are hand held. A tripod is something I need to buy again...having lost my last one!

Our night pics on our river canal cruise ride in Amsterdam were blurry too, but it's okay... this gives me a great excuse to return to Amsterdam one day for another boat ride ha ha.... :)
